About the SCCRC
The Council of the District of Columbia established the DC Sentencing and Criminal Code Revision Commission in 2006. It was created from the DC Sentencing Commission established in 2004 from the DC Advisory Commission on Sentencing (ACS), which was created in 1998. The Commission performs the following mandate:
- Review and analyze pertinent sentencing data;
- Review sentencing data, policies, and practices in the District of Columbia annually ;
- Submit an annual report to the Council summarizing the Commission's activities and including further recommendations as appropriate ;
- Make recommendations to the Council for the establishment of a fair and rational sentencing system which takes into account the requirements of the National Capital Revitalization and Self-Government Improvement Act of 1997 ("Revitalization Act");
- Make such other recommendations designed to enhance the fairness and effectiveness of criminal sentencing policies and practices in the District of Columbia;
- Analyze the District of Columbia's current criminal code and administration of existing criminal laws, and;
- Propose reforms in the criminal code to create a uniform and coherent body of criminal law in the District of Columbia
